"The goal of Competition Kitchen is to help people create unique and interesting stories that surround food. Hopefully we inspire people to walk away from the game and right into the kitchen. We'd love to see people be inspired to create some of the fantastic dishes that they create while playing the game. "

What is the origin and background of the Competition Kitchen?
Hi! Kevin Reader here. One of the designers of Competition Kitchen! Competition Kitchen is a deliciously creative party game that has been in development for over 10 months. It's like playing Chopped or Iron Chef, but at home, without the mess. Instead of food you have playing cards, and instead of pots and pans, you have your words and imagination.
What inspired you (and your team) to start Competition Kitchen?
We absolutely love competitive food shows. Chopped, Iron Chef, MasterChef, The Great British Bakeoff. You name it. We'll watch it. Also, we're huge Anthony Bourdain fans. We love rich and interesting stories that surround food. Favorite meals, favorite dishes, favorite restaurants. This is a game that allows you to bring all of those passions to the table and share them with your friends.
We're also comedians and story tellers. Both Joe and myself come from theater backgrounds. We have produced a lot of live comedy shows, videos, and podcasts. So, when we thought about what type of experience we wanted people to have while playing a game, we wanted to inject a lot of fun into it. We love inspiring people to tell jokes and share stories.
What is the mission or philosophy of Competition Kitchen?
The goal of Competition Kitchen is to help people create unique and interesting stories that surround food. Hopefully we inspire people to walk away from the game and right into the kitchen. We'd love to see people be inspired to create some of the fantastic dishes that they create while playing the game.
What some of the key design features of Competition Kitchen?
We have 100% original art. We teamed up with one of our favorite graphic novelists, Kevin Budnik, to design the cards and box for the game. The gameplay is completely unlike anything we have seen out there. We leaned hard into parodying reality TV shows. So this game can really transport you and make you feel like you are actually on a cooking show. You get to play both as judges and as chefs.
What are some of the greatest challenges you have faced and how have you overcome them?
Like a lot products out there, the biggest challenges are exposure and funding. Turning to crowdfunding a product means that you are going digitally door-to-door. You knock on their door, and say, "Hi, we're these people who made this thing, would you like to buy it, even though you haven't played it yet." It's both scary and exciting!
Whats the greatest achievement of Competition Kitchen?
We're really proud that we got to work with so many awesome people from the food world. We reached out to some of our favorite people and they have contributed secret ingredients to our game. Awesome folks like Mario Batali, Ina Garten, Claudia Wu, Graham Elliot, Max Temkin, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, Marc Summers and Dan Pashman.
What is the vision of Competition Kitchen in 2017?
Ideally we'd love to bring our games to as many homes as we can. We'd love to hit some big box retail stores in the future. We'd love to partner up with some cool people from the food world, potentially dream up some expansion packs to the game, then sell those to raise money for some food charities.
Any advice for future entrepreneurs and startups?
I always believe in two things. Heart and Hustle. Be passionate about the things you create and want to bring to the world. Believe in them. Be your own cheerleader. If you don't believe in it, no one else will. Then, get out there and hustle it. I think a lot of projects fail because people don't dedicate time to put in the work that is necessary to see something through.
Speaking of hustling, here's a link to our crowdfunding campaign.
We need a few more awesome people like you to jump on board to bring this game to life!
