What was the inspiration behind Chakanu?
In order to give you a better idea of the concept and reason why of Chakanu, I need to tell you a bit more about me and Ecuador. Ecuador is a country with a vast range of resources, considering that we have 4 regions and a wide diversity of products. Even though the country has about 60% of the people in low living conditions, there is a strong ethnic heritage and ancestral art, but it is not strongly established worldwide. With this in mind, I wanted to develop a brand that enhanced the Andean heritage, creating better conditions for communities and applying sustainability, and overall to help communities in my country to have a better life. That is why I went to Switzerland to specialize in sustainability and to begin giving shape to Chakanu. Later on, I came back to Ecuador to work on the product concepts and the artisans.
In Chakanu I have applied my background in marketing, the know-how in sustainability and my passion in creating a product that generates a positive impact and that delivers a contribution back to the society.
What is Chakanu's mission?
The mission of Chakanu is to create unique pieces of wearable art that enhance the Andean identity while helping the communities we collaborate with.
The objective of Chakanu is to deliver high-end products that integrate craftmanship, uniqueness, timelessness and legacy of the Andean cultures traditional art. The three pillars of Chakanu are, sustainability, design and anacestral art, for that reason the slogan is "Sophistication and Ancestral Art".
We want to promote the Andean ancestral art in avant-garde pieces of wearable art.
Where does the name "Chakanu" come from?
Chakanu comes from the name "Chacana", or Andean cross, a symbol of ancient indigenous cultures of the Central Andes and pre-Inca cultures. It refers to the sun and the Southern Cross, and has a meaning of ladder between man and the superior, to the highest.
The brand also refers to the word "Chacun" that means "everyone", because the philosophy of it is to consider all the participants and stakeholders of the system.
What are the key features of the design of your bags?
In all our products we combine the mastery and heritage of the Andean embroidery with avant-garde designs that evoke sophistication, artistry, timelessness and uniqueness.
How "sustainable" is your product?
Sustainability is in the DNA of Chakanu. We are constantly searching for new ways to apply sustainable practices. We work with the local communities and collaborate with them towards their improvement. We also apply sustainable sourcing and we are searching for new materials that have a positive footprint.
How do you promote your brand to a global audience?
Since our product is oriented to the international market, we apply social media as one of our main channels. We are constantly informing the audience about new products and collections. In addition, we have our online shop and we ship worldwide within 3-4 days.
What is your team's plan in 2017?
