WE HAD A FIRE

Saturday, the 29th of August, was a seemingly ordinary day for Kalyan Rai, our caseworker, when he detected smoke emanating from an air conditioner. Despite his quick actions, the situation quickly became life-threatening. Thanks to Kalyan’s efforts, the tenants and visitors of Block E of Chungking Mansions were all safely evacuated.  We are extremely grateful that no one was injured.  Unfortunately, our case work office, a home away from home for our clients, was reduced to ashes and dust.

Our Centre is a safe space where our beneficiaries find a community in a foreign city. It is where they come for comprehensive support: basic necessities (e.g. food, temporary shelter, and milk and diapers for babies), medical and mental health support, and education and training.  Our dedicated caseworkers, led by Jeff Andrews, are there for our clients for every day concerns, but also for many moments of crises: eviction, medical emergencies, funerals, and much more.

It is hard to put into words what it means for this community for every month that the centre is closed.  It feels like a big hole in our hearts.  This is the place where clients wait to see their case worker, where their kids play, where they share snacks, catch up on news, chat, get to know each other, our staff and volunteers.  This is where moms get comforted when they struggle to find hope for their kids' futures in Hong Kong, where families facing tragedies comfort each other, where we celebrate birthdays and practice holiday songs, where our clients can feel at home when they are far from their homes.

Kalyan’s quick actions on the day ensured that our kitchen and counselling rooms are functional, however the computer and telephone systems are temporarily down and we are currently operating with limited capacity.  Our team, with the help of our colleagues from Christian Action head office and volunteers, are working hard to restore our facilities and resume full services.

We need your help. Please help us reach our goal of HK$800,000 to re-build, renovate (including reinstatement, IT infrastructure, and overall safety measures).  Every dollar donated will go towards enabling us to resume our services to the fullest.  This is an urgent need, and we hope to be able to raise the required amount in 30 days.

Estimated Rebuilding Costs Building work

  • Fit out: HK$565,000

  • Cabling, IT & Security Systems: HK$235,000

TOTAL: $800,000

Please help us spread the word and/or start your own fundraiser to support our goal. Thank you for your support.

ABOUT US

In 2003, Christian Action set up the Centre for Refugees at Chungking Mansions, Hong Kong's first drop-in community centre for asylum seekers and refugees.  Our centre creates an inclusive community for refugees by fulfilling their humanitarian needs, providing opportunities for their future and empowering them to live with hope and dignity.  We fill gaps in humanitarian aid created by subsistence level government welfare by providing a comprehensive support system for nearly 1000 beneficiaries each month comprising families and individuals from all over the world who are seeking safety and refuge.
