The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates the total number of displaced people worldwide to 65.6 million.

According to the Immigration Department (March 2018), there are less than 6,000 asylum seekers in Hong Kong.  This is one of the smallest in the world (0,2 % of the population). As Hong Kong has not signed the 1951 United Nations Convention relating to the status of Refugees, an asylum seeker is called “non-refoulement claimant”, a refugee “non-refoulement claimant with a substantiated claim”.  They are often assimilated with illegal immigrants by immigration and fall under the group “non-ethnic Chinese”.

Asylum seekers and refugees survive on food coupons (about 40 HKD per day) or 1,200 HKD per month, and are granted 1,500 HKD per month in housing, paid directly to the landlord. Only a handful of refugees have been exceptionally allowed to work by the Director of Immigration and they do not have access to higher education. As the Government welfare assistance for this community is very limited, gaps remain in obtaining bare essentials such as clothing, shoes, school uniforms, books, diapers for babies and basic cooking utensils and rely entirely on charities for these items.

RUN's mission is to rehabilitate vulnerable refugees through running and other sports

  • help them recover from past traumas in a warm, friendly and safe environment

  • support them to develop skills for a more hopeful future

  • promote equality and understanding amongst participants and with the local host population

  • With a special focus on women

  • We are a community beyond sport
