「Dear Hong Kong—

Oskar Valles –

Aggie Lam –

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

If you were to write a letter starting with “Dear Hong Kong,” what would you write in it?

“Dear Hong Kong” is a project featuring the portraits and stories of people who came from different countries and made Hong Kong their home. The initial goal is to feature 150 new Hongkongers to see the truly vibrant nature of our city shine through in their perspectives and collective contributions.

Through our interviews, you will see that Hong Kong has attracted thousands of talented individuals from different races, professions, genders, age groups, and classes – one of the most positive aspects of a truly diverse city.

We have people who have dedicated most of their life to serve Hong Kong: the founder of Mother’s Choice, from the United States, the founder of ImpactHK from Canada and a HKU medicine professor from the Philippines. We also have people who are passionate about creating change and leaving their imprint on the city: Christopher Doyle – a renowned Australian film director; Lance Lau – a local ten-year-old climate change activist; Daniel Cancela – a Hong Kong national football team player from Spain. Their contributions to Hong Kong speak for themselves, and they are helping to build communities in the city from a variety of different backgrounds.

Let us put down our pre-conceived notions and worries and go into the communities of "the other" in search of what brings us together in this often unseen side of Hong Kong. You will discover along with us how many people from all around the world now call Hong Kong their home and have invested their hearts and souls here. These people have become true "local foreigners." Perhaps Hong Kong as an international metropolis should not be measured purely in terms of its economic prosperity, but by how many global citizens put down roots here, view our city as their home, adhere to a lifestyle full of diversity, and, most importantly, themselves become part of the story of diversity that is Hong Kong.

Apart from creating a bilingual photobook, we plan to hold free exhibitions in public areas and/or libraries so that these stories can reach all members of the community, in a way that is easy for people of all ages to understand. We hope to provide conversation starters for families to open up and share among themselves the marks they left growing up in Hong Kong.

Perhaps the key to understanding ourselves better and reconstructing Hong Kong as a truly diverse society is to understand others. Instead of classifying them as passers-by, why don’t we put this culturally diverse group of Hong Kong society into the spotlight and listen to their stories?

Your support for our project in documenting these stories is an excellent way to give back to our beloved city, your contribution is key to help us spread the message.

Hong Kong helped me a lot when I came. I really want to give back to the city.
-- Nutsa Kobakhidze, our Georgia representative

I have made 120 movies here, Hong Kong has given me so much. How could I not give it back? This is my home.
-- Christopher Doyle, our Australia representative

OUR PRODUCTION TEAM

This book is produced and edited by a non-profit society, Global Hongkongers, with members from different cultural backgrounds, countries, and careers with the mission of breaking stereotypes and promoting cultural diversity.

Oskar Valles (co-founder) - Full time global citizen, and Hongkonger for the past nine years, Oskar wants to give back to the city by leading this project to increase social awareness of diversity and inclusion. Having worked in transnational corporations and Ethnic minority focused organisations, he deeply believes in the unity of all humans, regardless of race, occupation, religion or status.

Aggie Lam (co-founder) - As a local Hongkonger who has travelled to 37 countries, Aggie truly understands how powerful and impactful face-to-face communication can be. Her life’s mission is to collect and discover as many inspiring stories as possible. She currently works in a social enterprise focusing on cultural education.

Bradley Aaron (main photographer) - Bradley is on the threshold of having lived in Hong Kong for longer than any other city. His years here have been characterized by the struggle of Hongkongers to present an identity of the territory defined on its own terms rather than by ties to an outside culture. As he passes the final months before becoming a permanent resident, he has joined the project as a photographer to help document and share the role of Hong Kong’s diversity in the city’s emerging self-definition.

Revolutionary power comes from a small change.
