THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT YOUR PERIOD.

What you need to know in 2 paragraphs. Period.

Have you ever felt uncomfortable speaking about periods? Almost 50% of Hong Kongers will have the experience of menstruation in their lifetimes, but as a society we almost never speak about it.  As a sex educator, I found that it is really hard for grown women, girls and boys to have open and positive conversations about menstruation. This has devastating consequences for the self-image of women and girls and for empathy and understanding in boys.  I compiled Things You Never Knew about Your Period to break the taboo around menstruation and show our shared experiences with periods in another light. This book goes beyond biology and embraces and celebrates menstruation from biological, historical, environmental, social policy, and gender perspectives. It gives readers, including teachers, practical exercises that will stimulate more open and positive conversations about menstruation.

Although, the digital version of the book is sponsored by MaD, the Make a Difference Institute, I still need your help to publish a printed version. A printed version will ensure that the materials reach more teachers and parents for a wider discussion. I am fundraising HKD9,000+ for the cost of the printed version, as well as for the cost of preparing educational programmes for Hong Kong’s schools. With your support, we can eliminate the stigma of menstruation by developing a culture that embraces period positivity and body autonomy amongst young people.

TELL ME MORE ...

How did you come up with this idea?

When I started using menstrual products like reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups, I realized that I was disconnected from my period and my body. When I was an adolescent, menstrual education was limited to product promotion by large companies producing menstrual products and biological explanations about menstruation taught at school. At this time, discussions about periods were also for girls only. So when I was at school, I received very limited information about the variety of menstrual products and the reasons that blood was coming out from my body.  No one taught me and my friends nor our male classmates about how to think about or how to deal with menstruation, which meant that girls who had their periods were teased by boys, and even the mention of menstrual products became taboo at school.

I have been promoting positive menstruation and body autonomy online and offline over the past 3 years, and sadly I find that not much has changed for students in Hong Kong’s schools. Actually, I find that the adult women I work with in Hong Kong, lack confidence in themselves and making their own decisions. Even if they want to try menstrual cups or other products, they will not do so, because their parents / husband / boyfriends do not want them to use these products. I realized that there wasn’t a lot of conversation out there about sex education and periods, so I started to write this book. As I began to talk to people about this project, I found that the discussion would immediately lead to intimate and constructive conversations about our periods.

I hope that the book can be a fun and easy way to help people reflect upon and talk about their own experiences with menstruation. We often don’t know what’s happening with our bodies and we don’t even want to touch it or see it. Menstruation is still a taboo for young Hong Kong Women. Help us break this cycle and be part of a support system to get others to #owntheirchoices.

What kind of social issue here we are solving

Girls in Hong Kong often feel gross and scared about their periods, the book aims to open the discussion around menstruation and smash the stigma associated with it.  We did online research interviewing 500 hundred women in 2015 about their knowledge of menstruation. We found that nearly 30% interviewees reported that they hadn’t received any menstrual education when their first period came. Over 40% interviewees thought that having their period is disgusting or felt scared before their first period. Menstruation is still a taboo and refusing to talk about it has negative consequences for how young Hong Kong women view themselves. I need your help to smash this stigma.

We aspire to break the taboo on menstruation by encouraging girls to develop a more positive understanding around menstruation. We also need to engage boys to develop empathy and understanding and most importantly to help promote a period-shame-free culture, where everyone, boys and girls can thrive.

How We Work 101

In the last three years, I have educated over 150 young people about menstruation in over 15 different organizations including secondary schools, universities and NGOs. I didn’t want to stop there, which is why I wrote “Things You Never Knew About Your Period” and why I need your help! Teachers can incorporate this book into their teaching programs, and provide positive menstrual education to young people. Parents can use this resource to prepare themselves to start the conversation about menstruation with their children and do the learning activities together from the book. Sex educators can talk about periods and incorporate much needed conversations on body anatomy. And everyone, who reads this book will find a positive perspective on menstruation within.

What are the risks/challenges of this project?

Although, ”Things You Never Knew About Your Period” is partially sponsored by MaD-Make a Difference, I still need your support to print and publish this book. I also need support to produce educational materials for young people so that more teachers and parents can feel comfortable speaking to young people, more conversations about menstruation can be started in schools and families, and menstrual stigma can be smashed!

The digital version is already finished. I am reaching out to as many different schools and NGOs as possible to explore collaborations. So please refer me on and share this information with your network.
